What Is a Space and How to Create One
A space is a container for one body of work. Learn how to decide where the dividing lines go between your shows, clients, and teams, then create one step by step.
A space is a container for one body of work. Everything inside it, your projects, documents, files, and team members, belongs to that space and nothing else. This article covers how to decide where your dividing lines should go, then walks through creating a space.
Spaces are the first structural decision you make in Northflow Flux, and the one that shapes everything after it. Getting it right means your shows, clients, and team access never get tangled up.
Before you start
Spaces live inside your workspace. If you are not sure what a workspace is or you belong to more than one, read Understanding Your Workspace first.
How to decide where the lines go
There is really one question to ask: what is the thing that should never get mixed up with another thing?
Your answer depends on how you work.
If you run one show: that is your show. One space, and every episode becomes a project inside it.
If you run an agency: that is your client. One space per client, so Client A's work never sits next to Client B's, and you control who on your team sees which.
If you run a network: that is each show. One space per show, so a host working on one show never has to scroll past another.
If you are still unsure, err toward fewer spaces. Splitting one space into two later is easier than merging two into one.
Three ways to create a space
All three open the same window, so use whichever is closest to where you already are.
The Create button at the top left, then choose Space
The small plus icon next to the Spaces heading in your sidebar
Settings, then Spaces, then New space in the top right
Setting up your space
The create window asks for four things at once. It only takes a minute, but each field is worth a moment of thought.
Pick an icon. Click the small square on the left to open the emoji picker, which has a search bar. Type something like microphone or heart and choose one.
Name the space. Use the real name, the show or the client. Avoid something generic like "Podcast Stuff".
Write a description. One line about what this space is for.
Add members. Click Add members and tick whoever needs access.
Click Create space. Your space appears in the sidebar and Northflow Flux drops you straight into it.
Why the icon matters
Icons are not decoration. Once you have six spaces in your sidebar, you will navigate by icon long before you read the names. Pick something you will recognize instantly.
Why the description matters
This one sounds minor and is not. When a new team member joins and you have eight spaces, that one line is the difference between them understanding your setup and them messaging you to ask about it.
Why members are per space
Members are added to one space at a time, and that is the entire point. Someone added to a client space cannot see your other clients or your other shows.
You can add more members at any time from the space Overview tab. See Inviting Team Members for the full walkthrough.
What happens next
Your space is now named, described, and ready for work. Northflow Flux opens it on the Overview tab, which is worth understanding before you start filling the space with projects. See The Space Overview Tab.
The next thing to create inside your space is a project, which is usually one episode. If you're not sure how a project relates to the space it lives in, see Projects vs. Spaces: What's the Difference? Once you have a project, you can lay out its whole workflow at once with a template, or track everything happening across all your spaces from Command Center.
